Some farmers allow ratoon crop to develop after harvesting their field. Usually, this is not wise.
For example in sugar cane, pineapple, chili, banana, okra, rice, a ratoon crop will give a very poor production, but it does provide juicy green leaves on which pests can continue to feed and multiply. In this way the ratoon cropping promotes the outbreak of pests in the following season.
In general, it is a good practice to destroy crop stubbles soon after harvest, for example by plowing.
At the same time, we should be careful not to turn the field into a desert where even the beneficial insects can not survive. It is advisable to leave some decomposing organic material in the field or around the fields to provide food and refuge for natural defenders.
