Ratoon Croping in Pineapple

Posted on

I’ve got several Maui Gold pineapples growing that were started from tops a couple of years ago. One has fruited and I’ll be picking it tomorrow as it’s now ripe. It sprang forth in the early Spring and it’s development has been interesting. Of course I’ll be starting a new plant from this fruit’s top.

My question is, will the plant require gassing again for the ratoons (secondary fruits) to form? It’s easy enough to do with a dead ripe slice or apple laid in the top and covered with a plastic bag for a couple of days. I wasn’t sure that if once gassed, the succeding ratoons would form sequentially or not. The plants can produce up to five ratoon fruits. That little bugger should prove mighty tasty tomorrow!
