In agriculture, crop yield refers to the measure of seeds or grains which is generated from a unit of land. In the United States, crop yield is often referred to agricultural output and is measured in pounds or bushels per acre. This measure is more commonly used for legumes, grains or cereal.
To estimate the agricultural output of a crop, gardeners usually weigh their harvested crop and extrapolate the field’s crop yield from that very sample. Every month, the USDA Crop Yield Statistical Service publishes a report for over 23 different types of products that range from wheat to tobacco, rice, barley and more. According to these reports, the highest crop yield occurred in 2016 and 2017 while the lowest was in the 1930’s during the years of the dust bowl and great depression.
Because it is also important to tally crop yield data all over the world, several equipment- including satellite imagery systems- have been set up to carefully monitor the agricultural output from different countries.
